Surgical Pathology (commonly referred to as "Surg Path") is the "meat" of the pathology field. Here, the pathology lab receives any specimen sent from the OR or clinician.  Examples include biopsies, tumor resections, excisions etc.

The tissue is then "grossed" (examined & sectioned through) looking for any lesions. Representative sections (or the entire specimen) are submitted then made into a microscope slide for pathologists to examine.

Pathologists are able to make a diagnosis based on a combination of the clinical history, what they see at the microscope and the results of any special tests (such as stains or molecular testing).  The final pathology report is then created and sent to the clinician/patient.
